DIY craft fair signs

As I'm busy making new signs for tomorrow's craft fair, I figured I post some photos along with my original DIY sign post.

These bright spots really make my table feel complete.  I use double stick tape to swap out the actual sign part each year.  For instance, this year instead of bottle boards I have tote bags, and so tonight I made a new tote bag sign and taped it over the bottle board sign.  The fabric frames it so nicely and makes it feel finished, and you'd never know that other sign is underneath.  Tricky.

Off to market.  (with green tea in hand)

Winter Fair

There will be hand printed houses
and black inked birds
and acorns sewn onto shirts and black organic bags.

There will also be popcorn and the pocket lady and hay rides and candle dipping. The best part about the winter fair is saying hello to the super people in my community.   If you are local and you plan to be there, please stop by and chat.  I'd really like that.

The Winter Fair

This is a picture of the Red Bird Crafts booth at our local Waldorf school's Winter Fair. My family has been going to the fair for the past four years. Eating grilled cheese around the bon fire, decorating gingerbread cookies, dipping beeswax candles, and making sweet woodland holders for the candles has become tradition. Oh, and I can't forget that seeing Father Winter wandering around, and reminding ourselves that underneath his long beard and velvet costume is a regular old person, has left quite an impression on Chick (my oldest).

And now, I am happy to count selling my wares as part of the yearly tradition. Don't even get me started about how much I love getting to stand around and chat with the people in my community. Love, love, love! It feels so decadent and easy breezy. A true gift.

Red Bird Crafts will be at another winter craft fair this weekend (twist my arm). I'll be at the lovely Greenfield Center School's Rumpus Craft Fair this Saturday (12.4) from 10-6. I'm definitely in love with the poster for the fair. Check it out. And, there are more versions of it hung all about town.

For now, I'll fold more laundry. The endless chore. Endless.

p.s. Do you see my mama's beautiful watercolor of three peaches and her oils (upper right) all the way at the end? Bonus! I got to spend the day with my beautiful mama who knitted the day away.

the happy garland

In the midst of doing all that I do, I've been practicing being mindful and present in whatever moment I find myself in. This practice isn't so much about apple juice spills on the floor being viewed as splendid play as it is about focusing on all that I have rather than on all that might be. Think: less what-ifs and more look-at-what-I-have-right-nows. This is where the happy banner comes in handy. With its simple images of woodland creatures and a cheery home, the garland serves as a clean slate, a reminder not to get too deep in it. When I feel the what-ifs coming on, I've taken to looking at this string of cheer, and it makes me smile.

And so, I whipped up a whole bunch of them because the more cheer the better, right? I used soft Kona cotton (in turquoise and tomato red too) for the base, earthy muslin for the flags, and my little block prints with black ink on the flags.

What else? Miss Mouse has taken to saying "whoopsie daisy" when she drops something and Chick is writing sentences where she spells the number six like this: seks. They kill me.

I am thankful for all that I have.

wee birdie shirts

My today consisted of playing with Mouse and sewing shirts for the craft fair season, which, for me, begins next weekend. I'll be selling my wares at The Hartsbrook Fair on *11.20 and at The Crafty Rumpus on 12.4. Hoorah!

In the next week or so, I'll be stocking my shop with some of these new t-shirt designs, and I'll be sure to let you know here when I do.

A little off topic, but does anyone else feel tense when huge groups of geese are flying overhead in the wrong direction? I saw a bunch flying north this morning, and I had an incredible desire to redirect them traffic cop style. Then I relaxed, and enjoyed watching their sleek hourglass shapes gliding through the sky.

Happy weekend.

* I originally wrote the wrong date. The Hartsbrook Fair is this Saturday (11.20). Thanks, dear Katie.

truckin'

I'm really excited to be participating in two wonderful local craft fairs in late fall - The Hartsbrook Winter Fair and The Greenfield Center School Rumpus. And, I'm super excited to release my new line of kids tees, which feature 100% natural muslin, hand carved print designs, and bright colored thread. I'll be sharing more of these new designs in the coming weeks.

Oh, and this truck is my newest hand carved print design. My friend Stephanie requested that I carve a truck stamp, and so I did because I am very easily persuaded. And, I really liked the idea of adding a big old truck to my line-up.

I'm still going to sell the popular appliqued shirts (birds, carrots, trees, etc.), but these will be in the mix as well.

s q u a m

Oh boy! I feel like the luckiest person this evening as I prepare to attend the Squam Workshops with my dear mom. Thank you, Mama! We are all set for printing and painting and knitting and camp firing. I even get to take a class taught by this lovely crafter! Hoorah! And, we are so excited to be accepted as vendors at the art fair on Saturday night. If anyone happens to be close to Holderness, NH, stop by and chat! My favorite knitter and knitting designer, Ms. Kelly Bridges, will be hanging at the booth with us. Double hoorah!

This past month has been wonderful and challenging and super busy and, at many times, quiet. Quiet like tonight when Chick and I read a library book about how bees make honey . Holy moly! The honeybee is the most unbelievable creature ever. We were in awe together, quietly chatting about the drones, the proboscis exchange of nectar, and all the rest. I urge everyone to learn a little bit more about our bee friends. Even Chick, who is quite frightened of the sting, seemed to fall in love with the furry, clever, little honeybee.

And, noisy when Mouse decided to dress like a fairy and parade around the house singing and stomping.

And, everything, really, but blogging and crafting. *sigh* June will be a horse of a different color since I am already scheming up a few new craft projects to share in this nifty little spot.

Off to bed. Much too late.

Triple hoorah!

Night.

Brooklyn Lyceum

Mr. Cute sitting at our booth. I think he had just stopped screwing hardware onto the backs of the hook boards.

Me. Happy to be in Brooklyn on a warm weekend in May.

It was an inspiring, beautiful, busy two days. I felt lucky to be surrounded by amazing and creative artists and crafters. My neighbors were Panda With Cookie, whose tofu pirate is my new best friend, the lovely Becka of Becka Soup, and Schmutzerland. Oh, and I especially loved meeting Emily from Slapp Happie. She makes the most beautiful embroidered pillows, bags, and such, and she made me laugh. I told her about the killer soft tacos across the street, and when she took a bite of one, it was instant bonding.

Thanks to those of you NYC peeps (and Ms. DelVicario) who visited the show - seeing you guys there made us so happy.

n e s t

These are a few of the little people story stones that I made as part of the collection for the Brooklyn Lyceum Food and Craft Market .

Tom found this glorious little bird's nest snug in the corner of the ceiling in our wood shed. I can't get over the layer of moss on the outside. Isn't it just perfectly beautiful? That mama bird is so my idol.

Why won't my almost 2 1/2 year old Miss Mouse nap? Why? Why? Why? Sorry, just had to complain to you guys. Now I'm off to rescue her from her snug bed. Maybe, I should hot glue a layer of moss around her crib?

Happy weekend.

m a r k e t

I'm honored and thrilled to be a vendor at the Brooklyn Lyceum Food and Craft Market on May 1 & 2. I've been perusing the shops and blogs of all of the vendors who will be there, and it makes me giddy. Oh! My! The next month will be filled with cutting old barn boards, printing, and making lots and lots of story stones. I'll be a busy bee.

:: little bits ::

Ariana introduced me to this lovely little shop that sells basic cotton wear for babies and kids. I'm quite fond of the sage and avocado colors, and I'm dreaming about one of the tunic dresses in sage for myself. In the meantime, I think I'll get one for Chick. Does anyone have suggestions for nice cotton basics for big people?

Emily from Tea & Laundry is one of my favorite new blogs to keep up with. Her peppy posts make me smile, and our uncanny similarities make the big blog world feel a little more intimate. Isn't her little umbrella notebook nifty?

I recently discovered Feed Your Soul : The Free Art Project on Indie Fixx, and I'm hooked. Check out this print from Asja Boroš. I love how she balances muted gray with a few bold, bright colors, and her shapes are just perfectly quirky.
